Hair Follicle Drug Test

A Hair Follicle Drug Test is a specialized screening method that examines drug use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days, by analyzing hair samples. This type of test is highly effective for detecting prolonged or repeated drug use and is commonly used for employment screening, court-ordered testing, and personal use by individuals seeking a thorough and reliable assessment of drug history.

Who’s Tested?

A Hair Follicle Drug Test is ideal for employers across various industries, individuals seeking insight into their substance use history, or agencies requiring in-depth screening. Testing is particularly beneficial for roles where long-term sobriety is critical to performance and safety. Some of the professions and situations where this testing is common include:

  • Commercial drivers
  • Healthcare professionals
  • Court-ordered screenings
  • Employers seeking thorough pre-employment verification

The Hair Follicle Drug Test screens for common substances such as:

  • Marijuana (THC)
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates (including morphine, codeine, and heroin)
  • Amphetamines and methamphetamines
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

Testing Procedures:

Hair Follicle Drug Tests follow a strict protocol for accurate and dependable results. Procedures typically include:

  • Collection of a small hair sample, usually from the scalp
  • Chain of custody, ensuring the sample remains uncontaminated and properly handled
  • Analysis at certified laboratories, adhering to high standards for precise testing
  • Review by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to assess any legitimate medical explanations for a positive result

Types of Tests Available:

  • Pre-Employment Testing – Before hiring candidates.
  • Random Testing – Unscheduled testing to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Post-Accident Testing – After certain types of accidents.
  • Reasonable Suspicion Testing – Triggered by observable behavior suggesting drug use.
  • Return-to-Duty and Follow-up Testing – For individuals who previously tested positive and are ready to return to work.

Consequences of Positive Results:

Individuals who test positive may be required to complete a program that includes an evaluation by a substance abuse professional, treatment if necessary, and follow-up testing. Return-to-duty testing with a negative result is also mandatory before resuming any role requiring sobriety.
