Prenatal DNA Test

A Prenatal DNA Test is a specialized screening that provides expectant parents with critical information about their unborn child’s genetic makeup. This non-invasive test analyzes the fetal DNA present in the mother’s blood, allowing for early detection of certain genetic conditions and helping parents make informed decisions about their pregnancy.

Who’s Tested?

Prenatal DNA testing is typically offered to:

  • Expectant mothers
  • Couples planning to conceive
  • Individuals at risk of genetic disorders

What Does the Test Screen For?

Prenatal DNA tests can screen for various genetic conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Down syndrome (trisomy 21)
  • Trisomy 18
  • Trisomy 13
  • Certain sex chromosome abnormalities
  • Other genetic conditions based on family history or ethnicity

Testing Process

The testing process involves:

  1. Sample Collection: A simple blood draw from the mother, which is then sent to a certified laboratory for analysis.
  2. DNA Analysis: The lab uses advanced technology to analyze the fetal DNA and detect potential genetic conditions.
  3. Result Review: Results are typically available within one to two weeks and are reviewed by a qualified healthcare professional who will discuss the findings with the expectant parents.

Types of Tests

  • First Trimester Testing: Typically performed between 10-13 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Second Trimester Testing: Usually conducted between 14-20 weeks, depending on the test.

Consequences of Results

If a prenatal DNA test indicates a higher risk for certain conditions, parents may choose to pursue further diagnostic testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), to obtain more definitive information.

Cancellation Policy

A cancellation will not result in a refund for any reason. However, you may reschedule your appointment as long as it is at least 24 hours before your appointment. If it is not at least 24 hours before your appointment, you will be charged a $50.00 reschedule fee. A no-call, no-show will result in you having to pay for another test.
