Oral Fluid Drug Test

An oral fluid drug test is a screening mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for employees in safety-sensitive roles within the transportation industry. This test ensures that employees are free from illicit drugs or misuse of prescription medications, safeguarding their ability to perform their duties safely and protecting public welfare.

Who is Tested?

DOT drug testing requirements apply to safety-sensitive employees, including:

  • Commercial drivers
  • Pilots
  • Railroad conductors
  • Pipeline workers
  • Ship captains and crew members

Substances Screened:

The DOT oral fluid drug test screens for:

  • Marijuana (THC)
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates (morphine, codeine, heroin)
  • Amphetamines and methamphetamines
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

Testing Procedures:

DOT drug tests follow strict protocols for:

  • Sample Collection (typically oral fluid, saliva)
  • Chain of Custody (proper handling to prevent tampering)
  • Sample Testing (in certified laboratories)
  • Medical Review Officer (MRO) Review (to verify results and allow for any legitimate medical explanations)

Types of Tests:

  1. Pre-employment Testing: Conducted before hiring.
  2. Random Testing: Unannounced, ongoing testing.
  3. Post-Accident Testing: After specific types of accidents.
  4. Reasonable Suspicion Testing: Based on observed behavior.
  5. Return-to-Duty and Follow-up Testing: For those returning after a positive test or violation.

Consequences of a Positive Test:

Employees who test positive or refuse the test are removed from safety-sensitive duties. They must complete a process that includes evaluation by a substance abuse professional, treatment (if required), a negative return-to-duty test, and follow-up testing before resuming work.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations are non-refundable. However, rescheduling is allowed if requested at least 24 hours before the appointment. Late reschedules (within 24 hours) incur a $50 fee. No-shows must pay for a new test.
