NON-DOT Drug Test Service Description
A NON-DOT drug test is a drug screening not regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Unlike DOT tests required for safety-sensitive employees within the transportation industry, NON-DOT drug tests are typically used by employers in other sectors or by individuals who require drug screening for personal or professional reasons. NON-DOT tests can screen for a wider range of substances and are more flexible in terms of testing methods and procedures.
Who Needs a NON-DOT Drug Test?
NON-DOT drug tests may be required for a variety of purposes, including:
- Employment outside of the transportation industry
- Legal cases or court-mandated screening
- Personal testing for health and wellness
- Compliance with company policies
Substances Typically Screened in NON-DOT Drug Tests:
- Marijuana (THC)
- Cocaine
- Opiates (such as morphine, codeine, heroin)
- Amphetamines and methamphetamines
- Benzodiazepines
- Barbiturates
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
Depending on the employer or testing needs, additional substances may be included.
NON-DOT Drug Test Process:
The process for NON-DOT drug tests includes:
- Sample Collection – Typically urine, though hair, saliva, or blood may be used based on requirements.
- Chain of Custody – Ensures sample integrity, with documentation for handling.
- Testing – Samples are analyzed in certified laboratories for accuracy.
- Review of Results – A Medical Review Officer (MRO) may review the results to confirm the legitimacy of any positive findings.
Types of NON-DOT Tests Offered:
- Pre-Employment Testing – For general employment outside of DOT-regulated roles.
- Random Testing – For employers who require ongoing monitoring.
- Post-Accident Testing – After workplace accidents.
- Reasonable Suspicion Testing – Based on observed behavior.
- Return-to-Duty and Follow-up Testing – For employees returning after a positive result.
Consequences of a Positive Result:
Individuals who test positive in a NON-DOT test may face consequences depending on their organization’s policies, including suspension or termination. Employers often require employees who test positive to complete a process involving assessment, treatment, a return-to-duty test, and periodic follow-up tests.
